Japanese translator Ippei Mizuhara, formerly associated with Los Angeles Angels sensation Shohei Ohtani, has been released on $25,000 bail following allegations of involvement in illegal betting activities. Mizuhara, accused of embezzling $16 million from Ohtani's account to cover gambling debts, appeared in court where he was handcuffed upon arrival, as reported by journalist Sam Blum.
Facing charges of federal bank fraud, Mizuhara could potentially face up to 30 years in prison if convicted. An arraignment for his involvement in the illegal betting case is scheduled for May 9.
Over a span of two years, Mizuhara allegedly placed wagers totaling hundreds of millions of dollars while in California, where such betting activities are prohibited by law. Additionally, he purportedly transferred access to Ohtani's accounts to other individuals as part of the scheme. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada has identified Ohtani as a victim in the case.
