Nigerian Government Denies Plans for Sports Betting Ban

Member of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Kelechi Nwogu, has refuted claims that the country's authorities are considering a ban on sports betting. Last week, during a parliamentary session, the legalization of betting was discussed, prompting the House of Representatives to seek input from the National Lotteries Regulatory Commission (NLRC), responsible for licensing lottery and gambling activities in Nigeria.

Earlier reports from local media suggested that Nwogu and his party were working on a bill advocating for a "complete ban on sports betting." Nwogu, however, dismissed these rumors, clarifying that lawmakers have requested the NLRC to review gaming laws with the aim of establishing a safer environment for both players and operators.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, an estimated 60 million individuals aged between 18 and 40 are involved in betting activities in the country.
