Australia bans credit card payments for gambling

Australia has implemented a new ban on using credit cards and other borrowing products to make payments for gambling and sports betting. The ban already applied to credit betting in land-based casinos.

However, it is still possible to buy a lottery ticket or keno with a credit card. This is an exception to the rule.

Licensed operators had a grace period to comply with the new rules, which has now ended. Violators of these rules could face hefty fines up to $155,000.

Government officials emphasised the responsible gambling and the importance of not risking money that one does not possess when gambling.
