Australians Spend Over $7 Billion Annually on Lotteries

Despite rising living costs, Australians are reportedly spending more than ever on lottery tickets.

Data from the Queensland Statistics reveals that Australians spent over $7 billion on lotteries during the 2020-21 financial year, marking a significant increase from $4.3 billion a decade ago in 2010-2011.

The figures include various lottery types, including scratch cards. New South Wales residents topped the spending with $1.9 billion, followed closely by Victorians at $1.8 billion. The findings coincide with a Queensland Accountability Office report, stating that residents in the state lost over $500 million on lotteries during the 2022-23 financial year.
