Brazil Establishes Gambling Regulator: Secretariat for Prizes and Betting (SPA)

The Ministry of Finance in Brazil has introduced the Secretariat for Prizes and Betting (SPA) as the nation's official gambling regulator. This regulatory body has been created as part of a comprehensive government initiative to enhance oversight within the rapidly expanding gambling industry in Brazil.

The SPA is endowed with various powers, including the effective regulation of the entire fixed odds sports betting and online gambling market. Additionally, the Secretariat will oversee processes related to lotteries and commercial promotions, collaborating with other government agencies to combat money laundering. A key responsibility of the SPA is to develop a responsible gaming policy that safeguards vulnerable groups of gamers, particularly minors.

Integrated into the broader organizational structure of the Ministry of Finance, the SPA will function as one of eight secretariats. Operating with the support of three divisions, the regulatory authority will be responsible for player authorizations, monitoring activities, and issuing gambling licenses to companies.
