The Danish gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, has issued a stark warning about the escalating dangers posed by illegal gambling activities. Highlighting specific concerns surrounding social media and technology giants, the regulator has underscored its concerted efforts to combat these issues head-on.
One of the primary threats identified by Spillemyndigheden is the promotion of unlicensed gambling sites by streamers and influencers via social networks. The regulator has previously taken steps to educate such individuals about the violations associated with advertising illegal platforms.
In its recent report, Spillemyndigheden detailed its extensive actions taken against illegal gambling operations throughout 2023. Notably, the regulator imposed restrictions on the operator Stake.com, recognized as the most influential among the blocked gambling entities. This decisive action followed a court mandate to block a total of 49 online platforms found to be operating unlawfully within the country.
Despite diligent efforts to restrict access to illicit sites, the report reveals that certain users persist in circumventing these measures. While there has been a notable decline in site visits, dropping from 15.8 million in 2017 to 1.8 million in 2023, the challenge of curbing illegal gambling activities remains an ongoing struggle for authorities.
