Former Mayor's Son Arrested on Suspicion of Stealing Casino Chips

The son of Woonsocket's former mayor, Lisa Baldelli-Hunt, was arrested on suspicion of stealing over $10,000 worth of chips from the Encore Boston Harbor casino. Investigators report that he took 13 chips, each valued at $1,000, from the dealer’s table before exiting through an emergency door.

Law enforcement identified Gary Hunt as a suspect based on a description provided, and he was apprehended in the casino car park. Upon his arrest, officers discovered several chips in his possession, and surveillance footage helped locate additional stolen chips.

In a statement to WCVB, Baldelli-Hunt expressed her deep sorrow over the incident involving her eldest son, Gary, attributing his actions to his ongoing battle with mental health challenges and addiction. She described his path to recovery as difficult and fraught with obstacles, stating, “This case reflects nature more than nurture, as all three of our sons were raised with equal love and support.”

Despite her efforts to help him, she acknowledged that he continues to struggle with his addictions. The former mayor conveyed her regret over her son's actions, while highlighting that no family is immune to such issues. If found guilty, Gary Hunt faces a potential sentence of up to five years in prison.
