India is edging closer to instituting its own electronic gaming regulator as the government shifts away from the notion of self-regulation. The National Law University (NLU) Delhi is gearing up to propose amendments to online gaming regulations to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aiming to facilitate clearer differentiation between gambling and non-gambling games.
As reported by the Economic Times, NLU Delhi, in collaboration with the Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF), is actively engaging with key industry stakeholders to shape the trajectory of future gaming regulations. Raghav Pandey, an assistant professor at the university, highlighted ongoing roundtable discussions aimed at soliciting diverse perspectives to craft robust guidelines.
Previously, the government had floated the idea of establishing self-regulatory bodies for gambling in compliance with the law. However, concerns about the potential industry influence on regulators prompted authorities to reassess their stance, ultimately shelving the proposal in early 2024.
