MGM Resorts Transitions Casinos and Hotels to Solar Power

MGM Resorts International has forged a partnership with Escape Solar LLC to provide its hotels and casinos with solar energy. This collaboration enhances MGM's existing status as the hospitality industry leader in solar energy, as the company already utilises solar power for 90% of its operations.

The newly established 25-year agreement with Escape Solar will further boost MGM's renewable energy initiatives, enabling 11 of its properties to meet 100% of their daytime energy needs. Moreover, the implementation of the Escape Solar + Storage battery system will ensure that MGM can access renewable energy even during the afternoon and early evening hours. The Escape Solar + Storage project, managed by Estuary Power, will be developed in Lincoln County, Nevada, and will feature a 115 MW solar installation paired with an advanced 100 MW/400 MWh battery storage system. This facility is expected to generate enough renewable energy to power approximately 28,000 American homes annually. Operations for Escape Solar+ are anticipated to commence in early 2026.

Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts' president and chief operating officer, praised the agreement as a significant advancement in the company’s environmental objectives, reaffirming its goal to source 100% of electricity in California from renewable sources by 2030. In 2023, MGM has made substantial strides toward its sustainability targets and is on track to achieve a 45% reduction in carbon emissions per square foot by 2025.
