Microgaming 30th anniversary: successes and plans of iGaming veterans

In comparison to other tech and entertainment industries, iGaming is still relatively new. However, as the online gambling sector continues to grow, so does the number of companies involved in betting. While Microgaming is a trailblazer in iGaming, they remain at the forefront of the industry. Established 30 years ago in 1994, Microgaming has been a driving force in the industry since the early days of online betting. In the ever-evolving global online gambling market, its anniversary is not only a milestone for the company but for the entire iGaming sector.

Looking ahead, industry leaders are hopeful for continued growth and improvement in regulation, product quality, and customer protection. In celebration of their 30th anniversary, IGF's special column spoke with key members of Microgaming's management team about their vision for the future. The industry is poised to build upon the successes of the past 30 years to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for years to come.

Microgaming: what happened in 30 years

In recent years, there has been a global push for companies and governments to take responsibility for driving environmental and corporate change within the iGaming industry. However, true results can only be achieved through collective efforts, rather than relying on the actions of just one entity.

Microgaming, established in 1994, has been dedicated to making the online gambling industry more sustainable and fostering a strong connection to the local community. As the company celebrates its 30th anniversary, it is sharing the strategies that have had a positive impact on markets, particularly in terms of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The focus on sustainability for people, place, and planet is evident in Microgaming's PlayItForward program, which serves as a guiding force for the company's CSR initiatives and overall corporate strategy.

Sustainability has been ingrained in Microgaming's business approach from the beginning, providing new opportunities for growth and innovation. Achieving certifications such as ISO 14001 has not only raised the bar for partners but has also spurred innovation and excellence within the company.

Partnership and joint experience are the guarantee of a successful business

Collaboration with partners, both locally and internationally, has been crucial in enhancing Microgaming's offerings and expanding its reach. Through strategic partnerships with companies like Games Global and Continent8, Microgaming has been able to leverage expertise and strengthen its platform, resulting in a wider range of products for customers.

Ultimately, Microgaming recognises that successful business ventures are built on strong partnerships and shared experiences. Trust and collaboration with partners have been instrumental in driving innovation and growth within the company, leading to the development of new strategies and opportunities for success.

More than just work

One key to Microgaming's success in business is the cultivation of a strong corporate culture and commitment to inclusivity. Creating an environment where employees can learn, grow, and feel valued has been a priority for the company. Many employees have been with Microgaming for extended periods, demonstrating loyalty and satisfaction within the organisation.

In order to foster a culture of value and respect for all employees, senior management at Microgaming emphasises the importance of openness, honesty, and transparency in decision-making. These core principles have remained consistent despite changing dynamics in the gaming industry over the past three decades.

As one of the pioneers in the online gaming industry, Microgaming faced challenges in attracting skilled professionals due to the industry's novelty. However, as the industry evolved and more qualified individuals entered the market, talent acquisition became a smoother process. By remaining true to its values and principles, Microgaming continues to thrive in an increasingly competitive environment.

PlayItForward program: winning the audience

Over the past 10 years, the PlayItForward program has played a central role in the company's engagement with the local community. Whether it's supporting local sports organisations or collaborating with environmental charities, PlayItForward can be considered a good and reliable tool for maintaining a company's image.

Kate Moutin, who oversees the PlayItForward project, is a strong advocate for supporting local initiatives. She explained that over the past 10 years, PlayItForward has invested over £2.5 million in the local community, as well as supporting over 270 different charities and worthy social causes.

From volunteering in the local community to supporting educational scholarships for Isle of Man students, PlayItForward strives to support initiatives that Moutin and the company believe are “the right thing to do.”

Ensuring player safety and promoting responsible gaming is an obligation

Microgaming, like many others in the industry, has long been an advocate for responsible gaming.

This work is supported through the PlayItForward program, which since 2020 has partnered with 10 national and international responsible gambling charities.

Kate Moutin said: “We believe player protection should be at the heart of every gaming experience. PlayItForward works very closely with organisations such as Gordon Moody, YGAM and Motiv8 Isle of Man to support their mission to treat, minimise and prevent gambling-related harm.”

In 2023, PlayItForward funding allowed Gordon Moody and Motiv8 Isle of Man to continue working on their “comfort fund” for the families and loved ones of those undergoing treatment for gambling addiction.

Meanwhile, the collaboration with YGAM has allowed the charity to expand its services to include local faith and community leaders, thereby making support available to a wider range of people.
