Nagasaki Faces Obstacles in Reapplying for Casino Development
The Nagasaki prefectural authority in Japan would encounter significant challenges if it decided to reapply to national authorities for the opportunity to host an integrated casino resort. This was emphasized during a meeting of the prefectural general affairs committee, where officials discussed the hypothetical scenario. Local authorities have confirmed their decision not to appeal the December ruling by Japanese leadership, which rejected the plan to develop integrated resorts with gambling facilities in Nagasaki.
Although Nagasaki officials have until March 27 to appeal, they have stated that reapplying would necessitate restarting the entire process of developing integrated resorts. The authorities acknowledged that the obstacles they would face in doing so are considerable.
In December, the Japan Tourism Agency, a division of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, deemed Nagasaki's proposal for integrated resorts as not meeting the required standards outlined in Japan's basic national policy. The proposed Nagasaki IR project was intended to be developed at the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in the city of Sasebo, located within the prefecture.
