The New Zealand government has announced a new strategy for regulating online casinos, focusing on "minimising harm, supporting tax collection, and ensuring consumer protection."
Although the details are still in development, Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden indicated that the primary objective will be to prohibit unlicensed operators within the country. Van Velden also provided insights into the regulatory framework, noting that her department will oversee the operations of licensed online casino providers in New Zealand.
Licence holders will be required to comply with stringent rules, including limited advertising. Notably, sports betting will be prohibited in conjunction with virtual casino offerings. Furthermore, the public will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on these regulatory plans, as the New Zealand government aims to implement the new online casino regulations by 2026.
