Online Casino Access Temporarily Blocked in Chile Amid Legislative Updates

Chile's Senate and Congress have embarked on a legislative overhaul to update the country's gambling laws. As part of this process, the government has implemented a temporary block on access to online casinos.

The legislative bodies are currently deliberating on amendments to finalize Law No. 035/2022, which aims to regulate online gambling activities in Chile. While lawmakers have reached consensus on a licensing framework and proposed a 20% tax on net profits, the legislative process has encountered delays. The document has been pending in the Senate Economics Committee since 2023, awaiting input from various stakeholders on technical specifications, penalties, and legal definitions.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of existing monopoly operators, who have filed claims demanding that online gambling be deemed illegal until the enactment of the new legislation. It's noteworthy that last year, officials faced challenges in reaching a consensus on this issue.
