Proposal to Legalize Video Gambling in Chicago Introduced

In a move aimed at stabilizing the budget and funding progressive policy initiatives, an ally of Mayor Brandon Johnson in Springfield has put forth a measure to potentially legalize video poker and slot machines in Chicago. The proposal comes amidst the proliferation of unregulated and untaxed betting machines and slot machines in bars and restaurants across the state over the past decade.

Presently, these machines are considered illegal in Chicago establishments. However, Representative Buckner is advocating for a phased approach to replace unregulated slots and betting with licensed video gambling. He emphasizes the need to address racial inequality within the industry as part of this process.

Buckner clarified that the proposal is currently at a preliminary stage and not yet a finalized bill. He further stated that negotiations on the introduction of taxed and licensed video gambling, in lieu of unregulated slot machines, would involve active participation from the Johnson administration.
