Spain Introduces Bill to Regulate Gambling Advertising by Influencers

Spain has taken a pioneering step in Europe by introducing legislation aimed at regulating the advertising practices of influencers and celebrities on social media, with a primary focus on gambling. This move marks a significant shift in the digital advertising landscape.

Under the new rules, individuals serving as the face of advertising campaigns and earning more than €300,000 from such endeavors will be required to submit an additional declaration. Specifically targeting influencers endorsing online gambling, the legislation imposes fines ranging from €10,000 to €150,000. Additionally, the bill imposes restrictions on all forms of gambling advertising across various media platforms.

The initiative aligns with the previous commitment made by Spain's Minister of Social Rights and Consumer Affairs, Pablo Bustinduy, to prohibit online casino and bookmaker advertising on social networks. The introduction of this bill signifies the government's determination to address concerns surrounding the influence of gambling advertisements on vulnerable populations.
