A recent study conducted by Ygam and GAMSTOP indicates that student gamblers often exceed their budgetary limits. The survey, involving 2,000 students across the UK, revealed that 60% of students participated in gambling at least once a year.
While the figure represents a decrease from the previous year's 71%, it remains concerning, especially since 46% of respondents reported facing difficulties in their university studies due to gambling. Issues included missing deadlines, reduced social interaction, and increased financial pressure as students struggled to meet basic expenses.
On average, students incurred losses of £35.25 per week or £1,833 per year. Notably, 15% of student gamblers reported losing £50 or more weekly. As a consequence, 32% of these individuals dipped into their savings to finance their gambling habits. Of this group, 23% used funds from student loans, 10% sought financial assistance from their parents, and 8% resorted to overdrafts - short-term loans accessed when personal funds are insufficient.
