The online division of Svenska Spel Sport & Casino, the Swedish state-owned gambling operator, faced a hefty fine of 100 million Swedish kronor ($9.5 million) for several breaches related to player welfare.
Following an investigation by Spelinspektionen, the Swedish gambling regulator, into Svenska Spel's activities from October to December 2021, authorities found shortcomings in managing the top 10 clients with the highest losses during that period.
Spelinspektionen concluded that Svenska Spel failed to implement adequate measures to protect players from excessive gambling and neglected to assist them in reducing their gaming activities when necessary, thereby violating regulations.
Responding to the fine, Svenska Spel's management acknowledged efforts to address some of the concerns raised by the regulator. However, they contested the assessment, calling for clearer guidelines from the supervisory authority.
