Swedish Gambling Trade Association Opposes Credit Gambling Ban

The Swedish online gambling trade association (BOS) has expressed its opposition to the Ministry of Finance's decision to impose a complete ban on gambling with borrowed money. According to BOS, this restriction contradicts the findings of an internal government investigation, which concluded that there were insufficient grounds for such a ban.

Gustav Hoffstedt, a politician and the General Secretary of BOS, accused the Swedish government of a "180-degree turn," emphasizing that the authorities are disregarding their own insights. Hoffstedt warned that unlicensed operators would continue to offer gambling with credit cards, and the share of the illegal gambling market, already at 41%, could further increase.

The BOS Secretary General argued that removing the option to fund gaming accounts with credit cards might not effectively address gambling-related debt. The memorandum suggests that licensed operators should identify problem gamblers engaging in excessive gambling.
