Bookmaker giant Tabcorp has been fined A$274,000 (roughly $182,000) for failing to stop minors from gambling. Violations were found in 13 of the company's establishments.
The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) confirmed that Tabcorp did not effectively prevent an autistic 17-year-old from illegally gambling at multiple establishments between May 2022 and October 2023. Among the establishments that accepted a minor client are Preston Hotel, Brunswick Hotel, Shoppingtown Hotel Doncaster, Olympic Hotel, Rose Shamrock and Parkville Hotel.
Despite Tabcorp's focus on creating attractive betting and entertainment conditions, their actions compromised the integrity and security of the industry.
While Tabcorp acknowledged their failure to prevent underage gambling and lack of oversight, they were fined A$274,000 ($182,200) by the court. Additionally, Tabcorp was required to pay A$96,417 ($64,100) in costs, bringing the total penalty to A$370,417 ($246,300).
