The outcome of South African elections may have a significant effect on the progress of gambling reforms within the nation
The upcoming parliamentary elections in South Africa have the potential to greatly impact the country's gambling industry. The current political turmoil is leading to a high level of uncertainty within the sector.
South Africa's new parliament is likely to determine whether a gambling regulation bill proposed by the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party gets any traction.
If the package of proposals is accepted, changes will impact regulations for both land-based casinos and online bookmakers. Additionally, the Remote Gambling document aims to address the deficiencies of the current system by implementing strong rules and regulations for the online gambling industry, tailored to the unique circumstances of South Africa.
For example, the bill would set the minimum gambling age at 18 years or older, as well as new operator licensing rules to ensure operator transparency and accountability.
The introduction of stricter rules should also improve taxation, giving the government an additional source of revenue.
