The Star Casino Under Fire for $3.2 Million Error
Nicholas Weeks, the special manager appointed to oversee operations at The Star Entertainment Group, has revealed a significant oversight that led to players receiving $3.2 million they had not rightfully won. Weeks disclosed that the company had falsified mandatory welfare checks on players, inadvertently allowing them to claim the substantial sum.
Weeks, appointed by the independent NSW Casino Commission in October 2022 amidst regulatory scrutiny, disclosed the error despite facing potential legal repercussions from The Star's management for revealing internal information.
The Star's tumultuous journey has been marred by regulatory concerns, leading to the revocation of its license for three months in October 2022. Despite efforts to rectify compliance issues, regulatory skepticism persists, prompting multiple extensions of Weeks' tenure.
In December 2023, The Star announced a six-month window to potentially regain its license for its flagship Sydney casino, following a hefty $65.8 million fine for money laundering-related offenses. Weeks, tasked with identifying and addressing systemic irregularities, highlighted the gravity of such violations, particularly evident in the mishap involving slot machines.
