The Star Faces Renewed Scrutiny with New Investigation

The Australian casino, The Star, is once again under investigation, this time by the New South Wales Independent Gambling Commission (NICC). Lawyer Adam Bell has been appointed to conduct a 15-week inquiry as the regulator believes the casino is not implementing the necessary changes promptly to expedite the reinstatement of its gambling license.

NICC Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford emphasized that The Star had been given 18 months to make substantial changes, showcasing the capacity and resources required for license reinstatement. The commission expressed dissatisfaction when the casino manager's term was extended for the second time in December 2023, leading to an extended correction period.

Crawford highlighted that The Star is at risk of closure, and the NICC is offering "every chance possible" for the casino to rectify its situation. The investigation report is expected to be submitted by May 31.

Since October 2022, the casino's operations have been suspended, and it faced a $65.8 million fine for money laundering-related offenses.
