Tragic Death of Sheriff's Deputy in New York Casino Altercation

New York authorities mourn the loss of Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello, a dedicated deputy sheriff, who tragically lost his life during an altercation at the Batavia Downs casino. The incident unfolded when Sanfratello intervened in a dispute between two patrons, 33-year-old Michael J. Elmore and 39-year-old Lindsey Jean Wilcox, within the casino's bar area.

Initial attempts to defuse the situation peacefully were unsuccessful, prompting Sanfratello to intervene further by escorting the individuals out of the establishment. However, the confrontation escalated as Elmore and Wilcox turned physically aggressive towards the sergeant. Despite deploying a stun gun in self-defense, Sanfratello succumbed to injuries sustained during the altercation.

The aftermath saw Elmore facing charges including manslaughter, assault on a law enforcement officer, and burglary, while Wilcox was charged with attempted assault and burglary. The NYPD confirmed Sanfratello's distinguished career, spanning over 32 years of service within the sheriff's office, further emphasizing the profound loss suffered by the law enforcement community.
