Trade unions, including the Culinary Union and Unite Here, are calling for a boycott of the Rampart casino following revelations about its licensing discrepancies. The unions have raised concerns after discovering that the gambling license for the establishment was issued to Shirazallah Jafferali Lalji, who passed away four years ago on March 28, 2020. Despite Lalji's death, his brother Aminmohamed assumed trusteeship of the casino. Currently, Aminmohamed serves as the President of Richmond Inn Investments, the entity that owns the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel in Canada.
The license in question expired in March 2024, prompting the unions to seek clarification from the Nevada Gaming Commission regarding its validity. Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge expressed concern about the involvement of Lalji's family business in a labor dispute in Vancouver, which he believes conflicts with the standards upheld in Las Vegas. The unions are adamant about addressing these licensing discrepancies and ensuring compliance with industry regulations and labor standards.
