France's gambling regulatory authority, L'Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), has announced a historic milestone with the country achieving a record gross gaming revenue of €13.4 billion in 2023. This marks a notable 3.5% increase in gambling turnover compared to the figures recorded in 2022. ANJ highlights that all segments of the market experienced revenue growth, a significant development since 2019.
The surge in online gambling activities in France is a notable trend, especially following the stabilization observed in 2022 amidst the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Isabelle Falck-Pierotin, President of ANJ, attributes this growth to the comparatively stringent regulatory framework in France, which provides stability and confidence in the industry.
ANJ further reports that the online gambling sector has been a key driver of growth, with its net income reaching €2.3 billion in 2023, reflecting a substantial 7.2% increase from the previous year. Within the online sector, sports betting emerged as the dominant segment, contributing to 63.3% of the total revenue, followed by poker and horse racing, which accounted for 21.6% and 15.1% respectively.
