Betsson stops sponsoring soccer in Chile

Betsson, the Swedish online betting and gambling operator, has decided to end its sponsorship of Chilean soccer. It had been supporting soccer in Chile since the beginning of 2021 and was even the title sponsor of Chile's First Division, known as Campeonato Betsson, for the 2023 season.

However, as of October 15, the sponsorship agreement was terminated. The decision was prompted by a crackdown on online sports betting operators in Chile. The Chilean Ministry of Justice ordered the termination of all gambling partnerships, and the Supreme Court of Justice declared more than twenty online sports betting sites illegal in the country. The lawsuit was filed by the national lottery, Polla Chilena de Beneficia, against telecommunications company Mundo Pacífico for blocking access to 23 websites providing gambling services in Chile without the necessary legal authorization. These websites included Betsson, as well as other well-known brands.The court found that Polla Chilena was the only organization authorized to provide online sports betting in Chile.

The National Association of Professional Football in Chile (ANFP), which had a sponsorship agreement with Betsson, was unable to successfully challenge the ministry's instructions.
