Danish Gambling Market Shows Resilience in 2023

Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, recently released its annual report titled "Gambling Market in Figures for 2023." The report highlights the performance of the Danish gambling market over the past year, particularly noting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite facing various restrictions in the preceding years due to the pandemic, 2023 marked the first year when all bans on land-based gambling were lifted in Denmark. However, the net gambling revenue for the year amounted to $1.48 billion, representing a slight decrease of 1.7% compared to the previous year.

While online casinos and land-based casinos experienced modest growth of 0.3% and 2.6%, respectively, other verticals such as lotteries and sports betting saw declines. Lotteries reported a decrease of 0.7% to DKK 3.47 billion, while sports betting experienced a notable drop of 9% to DKK 2.2 billion.

Despite these challenges, online gambling remains a dominant force in the Danish market, accounting for 64% of total revenue. This segment has shown consistent growth since 2012, reflecting changing consumer preferences and industry dynamics.
