Irish Gambling Authority Expenses Reach Over €2 Million Amid Operational Delays
The Irish Gambling Authority has incurred expenditures exceeding €2 million despite its non-operational status. Delays in legislative adoption have significantly hampered the establishment of the regulatory body, with the 2022 regulation draft currently in its final stages but yet to be ratified.
Data released by the Irish Ministry of Justice reveals that €161 thousand was allocated to the creation of the regulator in 2022, followed by an additional expenditure of €1.63 million in 2023. As of March 2024, authorities have expended a further €303 thousand.
Justice Secretary James Brown highlighted the complexity of the legislative process, describing it as "a huge piece of legislation." He emphasized the multifaceted approach being undertaken, focusing not only on licensing but also on public health, anti-money laundering measures, and child protection initiatives.
