In the inaugural year of legalized betting in Ohio, the state's licensed retail and online operators recorded an astounding sports betting volume of $7.7 billion. The state's Casino Control Commission expressed astonishment, stating that player activity surpassed even their most optimistic projections.
Ohio legalized betting at the end of 2021, and on January 1, 2023, the state officially launched its retail and online sports betting market. Initially anticipating a sector reaching around $3.35 billion after several years of operation, the Commission was pleasantly surprised by the substantial figures achieved in the first year.
The lion's share of the revenue was generated through online and mobile sports betting, with the retail sector contributing a modest $23.1 million to the total. After taxes, operators reaped approximately $750 million in revenue for the year, marking a successful start to Ohio's foray into the world of legalized sports betting.
