Portugal has achieved a new milestone by breaking its own quarterly record for online gambling revenue for the sixth consecutive time. In the fourth quarter of 2023, the industry reported a revenue of €227.4 million ($246.8 million), marking a 5.6% increase compared to the previous record of €215.4 million set in the third quarter.
Online casino games contributed significantly to the total revenue, with €154.5 million generated, showing a substantial 40.7% growth from the previous year. Player expenditures on gambling reached €3.84 billion during this period, indicating a notable 28.7% increase from the previous year. Slot machines constituted 83% of all bets, with French roulette and blackjack making up 6.9% and 4.7%, respectively.
The fourth quarter also witnessed a surge in the number of new accounts registered on gambling platforms, with 319.5 thousand new accounts created during these three months, compared to 237.6 thousand in 2022.
