Atlantic City Greenlights Smoking Ban in Casinos

A bill prohibiting smoking within Atlantic City casinos has received approval from the New Jersey State Senate. Introduced by the Committee on Health, Social Care, and Support for Older People, the legislation was endorsed by Committee Chairman Joseph Vitale.

Workers in Atlantic City's land-based casinos have long sought a smoking ban inside the establishments, and this bipartisan-supported bill marks a significant development. The bill, initially presented in January 2022, addresses the demands made by casino employees.

While smoking was briefly prohibited during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the restriction was lifted in July 2021. The recent bill aims to reinstate the smoking ban, despite opposition from casino management. The New Jersey Casino Association argues that prohibiting on-site smoking leads to patrons not returning to play after stepping outside to smoke, resulting in lost revenue for the establishments.
