Australia Issues Record Gambling Industry Fines for 2023

In 2023, global gambling regulators saw a surge in financial penalties, marking a 42.3% year-on-year increase over the 12 months, reaching a record of $442.6 million.

Australia and the UK led in imposing fines, with gambling regulators instructing operators to pay A$457.6 million ($305.2 million). Among the penalized entities, the Crown Resorts casino complex faced significant repercussions, receiving a fine from the Australian Transaction Reporting and Analysis Center that nearly equaled the entire record amount (450 million Australian dollars).

The UK Gambling Commission mandated a total fine of £214.2 million. The largest fine of the year was directed at the William Hill Group, totaling £19.2 million. The organization faced penalties for non-compliance with anti-money laundering measures at three gambling establishments.
