Authorities in the U.S. state of New Jersey have postponed a bill banning smoking in casinos, sparking a wave of discontent among casino employees. Over a hundred workers filled the state Capitol’s courtroom to express their dissatisfaction.
Lamont White, a dealer at Borgata Casino, stated that New Jersey’s “Democrats” have to be “begged” to pass the bill, while other establishments in the state already prohibit smoking. His colleague, Nicole Vitola, spoke about long shifts where players “blow smoke in the faces” of casino staff.
State Senator Joseph Vitale called off the bill’s review because it fell one vote short of the necessary count. The official apologized to the workers, who traveled 290 kilometers from Atlantic City to attend the session, and promised to revisit the bill as soon as possible.
