Concerns Raised by EU Industry Regarding Italian Online Gambling Decree

European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has expressed apprehension regarding a new Italian decree related to online gambling. Currently under discussion in the Italian Council of Ministers, the proposed decree outlines significant reforms in the gaming sector, particularly concerning licensing fees.

If approved, the decree will introduce an unprecedented licensing fee of €7 million, surpassing fees in other EU countries. The association deems such a substantial increase in licensing costs as "unjustified," especially in comparison to previous permit fees in Italy.

Maarten Haier, Secretary General of EGBA, described the proposed fee hike by Italian authorities as "unheard of." He emphasized that, when combined with other restrictions on the gambling market, such as local advertising bans, the proposed tariff increases would deter new entrants to the Italian market and prompt existing licensees to exit.
