Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially signed SB 1638 into law, earmarking gambling revenues for environmental projects across the state. Under the legislation, an annual allocation of funds, starting with $536 million in the upcoming fiscal year, will be directed towards various environmental initiatives, including the modernization of sewer infrastructure.
The bill complements the gaming agreement brokered between the state government and the Seminole Tribe in 2021. As part of the deal, the tribe gained exclusive rights to operate bookmakers and casinos. In return, for the initial five years of betting operations, the tribe has committed to making installment payments totaling $2.5 billion to the state.
