Entain, the British gambling powerhouse, has initiated legal action against the former owners of the BetCity bookmaker, Dutch company Sports Entertainment Media. The legal move comes after Entain's acquisition of BetCity at the beginning of 2023 for a sum of €300 million.
The lawsuit has been filed in the UK Commercial Court and is believed to revolve around a contract dispute, likely connected to the acquisition of BetCity. However, the details of the case remain undisclosed at this time, leaving the specific allegations made by Entain against Sports Entertainment Media unknown.
The defendants in the lawsuit include not only the company itself but also former executives of the bookmaker, namely Melvin Bostelaar, the former CEO of the company, and Robert Kooyman, the former head of the marketing department.
BetCity stands as one of the prominent gambling entities in the Netherlands, holding a position among the first ten online casino licensees. The brand commands a substantial market share in the country, and Entain's acquisition of BetCity aimed to bolster its presence in the Dutch gambling market.
