The concept of such a regulatory position was outlined in an official government document released in April 2023.
Despite the government's commitment to collaborate with the industry and relevant stakeholders to create an independent gambling dispute resolution ombudsman, concrete steps toward appointing a suitable individual have yet to materialize.
Currently, dispute resolution providers and the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) collectively handle approximately 2,000 consumer complaints annually, with many revolving around issues related to social responsibility breaches and harm caused by gambling.
The Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS), the UK's existing dispute resolution service, has expressed readiness to undertake the role of an ombudsman, presenting a consumer-centric plan. However, the realization of this transition is contingent upon the support of key stakeholders and the development of an appropriate funding model.
