In a major crackdown, Hong Kong police have conducted raids on 252 illegal gambling establishments over a span of three days, resulting in the arrest of 347 individuals involved in running casinos, drug trafficking, and sex work. Additionally, numerous pubs operating without proper permissions are slated for imminent closure.
The police, acting on tips related to illegal gambling, targeted a range of businesses including mahjong parlors, nightclubs, and saunas. Among those apprehended, 13 were mainland Chinese residents, and three individuals were found to be in Hong Kong illegally.
This operation's scale and impact surpass the results of a similar crackdown in February 2023 when 234 people were arrested, and only 15 gambling establishments were shut down. The recent enforcement efforts underscore the authorities' commitment to curbing illegal activities and maintaining public order in Hong Kong.
