Ireland to Fully Exempt Charities and Sports Clubs from New Gambling Advertising Rules

In a recent development, the Irish Department of Justice has announced that it will grant full exemptions to sports clubs and charities from the upcoming gambling advertising regulations. Initially, the proposal suggested excluding games offering prizes of up to €10,000. However, following complaints from the public and opposition politicians, the decision was made to completely exempt these organizations from the regulations.

Under the proposed gambling legislation in Ireland, advertising of gambling activities on television would be prohibited before 9 pm. However, sports clubs and charities raised concerns that this inclusion could negatively impact their fundraising efforts for various charitable causes. Responding to this feedback, Justice Minister James Brown stated that the department had taken heed of the concerns and opted for a complete exemption for these entities.

The bill aimed at regulating gambling in Ireland was slated to be enacted last year. However, it has faced delays in Parliament since July, primarily due to disputes over reforms to the criminal code and funding for horse racing.
