Macau is taking steps to address illegal gambling activities in public spaces through a new bill aimed at imposing fines on offenders. The proposed legislation, currently under discussion by the Second Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly, targets gambling activities occurring in parks and other public areas.
According to reports from local portal Macau TDM, fines for gambling in public places could range from $186 to $620. Committee president MP Chan Chak Mo highlighted that the definition of "public place" is broad and encompasses locations such as squares, busy streets, parks, and recreational areas. He also emphasized that the proposed law includes provisions to mitigate or exempt penalties for minor offenses.
One such provision allows for reduced sentences or exemption from punishment for individuals who provide valuable information to law enforcement and assist in apprehending other individuals involved in illegal gambling activities. This approach aims to incentivize cooperation with authorities in combating gambling-related crimes in Macau.
