Maine Lawmakers Reject Online Gambling Legislation
In a close vote, the Maine House of Representatives has struck down LD 1777, a bill aimed at granting the Wabanaki tribe exclusive privileges for online casino gambling. The proposed legislation sought to expand Indigenous gaming rights, granting tribes sole authority over the online sports betting sector.
With 74 representatives voting against the bill and 71 in favor, the decision reflected divided opinions within the legislative body. David Boyer, expressing reservations, emphasized concerns about potential job losses in Oxford and Bangor, citing disparities in tax rates between regular casinos and online platforms.
Proponents of LD 1777 highlighted its potential to address inequalities among tribes and bolster community investments. Representative Aaron Dana, advocating for the Passamaquoddy Tribe, underscored the bill's capacity to empower First Nations to channel resources into local communities rather than private operators.
