Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota has expressed his willingness to sign a sports betting legalization bill if it is passed during the 2024 legislative session, which began in mid-February. State Representative Jeremy Miller introduced a bill that outlines provisions for First Nations tribes, racetracks, and professional teams to offer sports betting at their respective venues.
The proposed legislation includes the appointment of a betting commissioner who can issue up to 11 licenses each for sports betting operators and online platform developers. The tax rate on sports betting net revenue would be set at 15%.
Miller highlighted that Minnesota is currently the only state in the region where sports betting remains entirely illegal. He believes the proposed bill accommodates the interests of Indian tribes traditionally involved in the gambling sector and professional sports teams.
