In New South Wales, Australia, authorities have intensified their enforcement against improper ATM placements in gaming halls, leading to 16 fines and 13 criminal prosecutions. This crackdown, led by Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&G NSW), follows the recent adoption of laws prohibiting ATMs from being located near slot machines to curb gambling addiction.
The case of a licensee at a Liverpool Street hotel in Sydney exemplifies the strict enforcement. The venue was found to have an ATM in the same area as slot machines, ending in a $3,624 legal cost penalty. L&G NSW warns that cash dispensing devices must be physically separated from gaming rooms to prevent impulsive cash withdrawals and spending by gamers.
Since December 1, 2023, L&G NSW inspectors have conducted 437 inspections across hotels and gambling venues so far to ensure compliance with new regulations.
