Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has disclosed that within the first 30 days of enforcement of Law No. 31557, regulating online gaming and sports betting, the government received 145 license requests from diverse gambling operators. Additionally, 184 applications from technological gaming platforms were submitted during the same period.
The law, which came into effect on February 9, provided operators with a window until March 10 to apply for licenses. Mincetur authorities have since begun reviewing the applications, cautioning operators that failure to comply with licensing requirements could result in fines of up to $259 or even criminal prosecution.
Effective April 1, operators in Peru will be subject to a 12% tax rate on gross gambling revenue (GGR). Mincetur forecasts that online gaming and sports betting will contribute approximately $162 million annually to Peru's economy.
Under the taxation scheme, 40% of the revenue generated will be allocated to Mincetur to enhance supervision of online betting technology operations. The remaining funds (20%) are earmarked for allocation to the state treasury, the Department of Mental Health within the Ministry of Health, and the Institute for the Development of Sports in Peru.
