Raising the gambling age sparks debate in Belgium

A fresh debate has emerged in Belgium surrounding the decision to raise the minimum gambling age. Beginning September 1, the legal age for Belgians to participate in sports betting and casino activities will be set at 21. This new regulation distinguishes Belgium from other EU nations, such as the UK, Sweden, Germany, and Austria, where the legal gambling age is 18.

Many Belgians are questioning the rationale behind this specific age limit for gambling. They are asking, "If the lawmakers believe 21 is the appropriate age for gambling, shouldn't this age restriction also apply to other high-risk activities, like consuming alcohol, smoking, driving, and accessing adult content?"

There is a sense of confusion regarding why gambling is treated differently compared to other adult activities generally permitted for those aged 18 and over. Nevertheless, the increase in the minimum gambling age will officially take effect in Belgium on September 1.
