Star Entertainment Group reminded of possible licence revocation
The New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has issued a fresh warning to Star Entertainment Group, indicating that it may revoke the company’s licence or impose a fine in response to violations highlighted in the second Bell report. The NICC has set a deadline of September 27 for Star to address the identified deficiencies.
The report outlines four significant breaches: a fraudulent scheme involving a faulty cash-out machine, inadequate screening of numerous 'high-risk' customers, and check fraud issues.
Additionally, the commission disclosed communications related to Star’s governance structure, including aggressive messages from employees. They left unresolved the question of whether the company would regain its standing. The NICC stated that any sanctions against Star would hinge on the company's actions in response. Potential measures include the revocation of Star's casino licence in New South Wales, fines reaching up to A$100 million (approximately $67.2 million), adjustments to licence conditions, and restrictions on certain activities.
Star has acknowledged the notice and is currently reviewing the raised issues, with plans to submit a comprehensive report by September 27. In the meantime, the company confirmed its ongoing collaboration with various stakeholders and advisers regarding its financial situation.
