The Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen) has officially endorsed government measure FI2024/00442, banning the use of credit cards in gambling. This ban, which has been under discussion for several months, has now been formally enacted.
Camilla Rosenberg, the General Director of Spelinspektionen, stated that the restrictions on credit card use should apply to all forms of gambling, with some unspecified exceptions.
The Swedish trade association BOS has criticised the ban, arguing that it will harm the legal gambling market. Spelinspektionen acknowledged the lack of research on how this measure might impact legitimate online gambling operators.
Additionally, there is some ambiguity regarding how the ban will affect players who place bets using account credits. The regulator has clarified that licensees must ensure that credit limits are not utilised for payments made with debit cards.
