The Swedish government has introduced a bill to raise the gambling tax by 4% starting from July 1, 2024. The current tax rate requires gambling companies to contribute 18% of their net gambling revenue to the state. If the bill is approved, this rate will be increased to 22%.
The proposed tax hike aims to generate an additional 540 million Swedish kronor (€45.5 million) annually for government activities. The Swedish Council of State considers the increase to be an appropriate level for augmenting funding without disproportionately affecting businesses or the tax base.
Officials emphasize the importance of stabilizing the country's legal gambling market. Since 2019, gambling establishments have had the option to apply for a license in Sweden, allowing them to legally offer their services. The government also highlights the role of the regulator, Spelinspektionen, which, as of July 1, 2023, has the authority to block illegal online casinos to secure additional funding.
