The Netherlands will increase fines for illegal gambling devices fivefold

The penalties for using slot machines in the Netherlands have been significantly raised by the Dutch gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). The new tariff is around five times higher, with offenders now facing a fine of 20,000 euros for each illegal device.

The previous law, passed back in 2014, set fines for such violations ranging from 7,500 to 20,000 euros. They have now been increased to 25,000 and 100,000 euros per device found.

The fine amount will be determined based on the gravity of the offence, with the KSA highlighting that a higher penalty may be imposed if the device was operated by a minor.

Because the devices are not regulated, the Authority says slot machines generally pose a significant risk of money laundering and tax evasion.
