Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Proposes Moratorium on Gambling Activities

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has introduced a bill, spearheaded by Yulia Tymoshenko and other deputies, aimed at amending certain laws to impose a moratorium on organizing and conducting gambling activities.

Under the proposed legislation, licenses issued to operators would be suspended, prohibiting them from conducting gambling and bookmaking activities. This measure extends to both online and land-based gambling establishments, including individual gaming halls. Despite ongoing concerns about gambling addiction, the Ukrainian gambling regulator recently issued a license for the ChampionClub online casino on April 4.

The move towards discussing a ban on gambling gained momentum after a petition was filed by military personnel, urging for restrictions on soldiers and officers from gambling while on duty. The petition garnered enough support to prompt consideration by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Additionally, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance has endorsed legislation aimed at bolstering oversight of the gambling industry.
